APPLICATION

The plant is based on liquid jet ejector technology and on the availability of liquefied chlorine in containers, 32% or 50% caustic soda solution and demineralized water. Electric power and chilled water are the only plant utilities required.

Product obtained is sodium hypochlorite solution at 3% or 6% concentration as active chlorine.

Batch-wise process is a small-scale suitable technology, cheap and safety, thought to match market demand for low production capacities. The low investment and operating costs make such a technology attractive for any Client which would undertake the production of sodium hypochlorite in small volumes and employing limited assets.

Standard plant capacity is 5 tons/batch of sodium hypochlorite solution. As all batch-wise processes, daily production depends on different parameters, such as requested concentration of sodium hypochlorite solution and scheduled number of working hours per day.

PROCESS
DESCRIPTION

Sodium hypochlorite is synthetized starting from gaseous chlorine and opportunely diluted caustic soda solution according to the following reaction:

Cl2 + 2 NaOH → NaClO + NaCl + H2O

The above reaction takes place in a closed loop, which main equipment is the liquid jet ejector, where vaporized chlorine is absorbed by the motive fluid consisting of a liquid stream containing caustic soda.
Since the synthesis reaction is fairly exothermal while product shall be maintained at temperature not exceeding 26°C, the heat developing out of the process is continuously removed.
A chilled water cooled heat exchanger is part of the reaction loop.

The plant includes the following units:

LIQUID CHLORINE VAPORIZATION AND HEATING

Chlorine vaporization: Liquified chlorine is vaporized through isenthalpic expansion in a suitable designed valve. A significant cooling of the chlorine stream, down to -34°C, is associated to such an expansion.

Vaporized chlorine heating: Gaseous chlorine is heated up to 10°C, by means of a dedicated heat exchanger, before being sucked by the ejector.

SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE SYNTHESIS

Reaction loop: The closed reaction loop is composed by: liquid jet ejector, static mixer, sodium hypochlorite circulation tank, circulation pump and cooler. Adsorption and mixing of reactants, which start in the ejector, are promoted and completed by the static mixer and the circulation tank. In the latter equipment, also the initial charging of caustic soda and demi water is carried out. Circulation pump and cooler are designed in such a way as to avoid heat buildup in the reaction loop, which could lead to a harmful increase of product temperature.

Product discharging: Obtained sodium hypochlorite solution, contained into the circulation tank at the end of the batch-wise production, is discharged and sent to storage by means of the same circulation pump.

CONTROL
SYSTEM

Plant operation is semi-automatic.
Pivotal steps, such as raw materials dosing and reaction, are automatically regulated by advanced PLC system. Not crucial steps, such as product discharging, are manually managed by plant operator.
